Application Methods and Precautions
Young Living Essential Oils can be applied by diffusion (with a cold method diffuser), topically, and some even orally, added to food, water or in a capsule.
Hair follicles enhance absorption rate – so animals with more dense hair follicles will absorb the oils much more quickly, sometimes only diffusion is needed for the oils to be effective, or if used topically, much less is needed for pets with more dense fur. Starting with only 1 or 2 drops, especially for smaller animals, is wise.
Essential oils are detoxifying and therefore can and will push out lawn chemicals, ice- melting chemicals, other toxins, and more – a process that can irritate the skin if there are a lot of toxins. Start off with a small amount when applying topically. Adding additional essential oils to the situation would only detoxify the skin further causing more irritation so if irritation occurs, dilute with a carrier oil and wait, offering more fresh water for your pet to drink to help flush out toxins. You can try using the same oil another time as it was most likely a detoxifying effect causing the irritation.
Eyes, Ears and Reproductive Organs
Precautions include NEVER put drops in eyes, ears or on reproductive organs. If this ever does happen, NEVER use water as that will just spread and intensify the oil; instead use an olive oil or vegetable oil to dilute the essential oil. Relief should come quickly.
There are a few oils that are photosensitive including the citrus oils, White Angelica, Bergamot, Joy, Angelica – so avoid sun if you have put them on your skin, or pets’ skin, or apply sunscreen before going outside; or apply oils to an area that will be covered by clothing.
Only Young Living Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils are recommended for the care of animals and humans. No other oils are considered therapeutic grade, or compare to the high quality and purity standards. Period.
